Adult Education Programs

Learners from CWEP’s programs are typically from the geographic area of Kensington (19125 zip code) – one of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Census data indicates that in the 19125 zip code: 13% are unemployed, which is more than double the City average of 4.6%; 29% of Kensington residents live within 150% of the poverty level; the per capita income is $12,720; and 50% of the children live in poverty. Ninety-five percent of our client population is considered vulnerable or at-risk based on socio-economic factors. Single women who are heads-of-household account for eighty-five percent of our clients. Many of these women have criminal backgrounds and/or live in violent homes. In order to assist these at-risk learners with their educational and vocational goals, CWEP serves as a community resource, offering the following programs:
 
  • General Education Classes (GED) taught both on and off site
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Low Literacy Adult Basic Education (ABE)
  • Workforce Development Literacy Program
  • Basic Skills: Reading, Writing, & Math Preparation for College, GED, Vocational Training & Personal Enrichment
  • CareerLink Mathematics Tutoring
  • Star Career Academy GED Preparatory Courses
  • Employment/Job Readiness
  • Computer Courses, for beginning and intermediate students enrolled in our literacy programs.
