CWEP's Mission and Vision
Our Mission is to help low-income women improve their lives and achieve self-sufficiency by providing a continuum of adult education classes.
Our Vision is for a quality learning environment where all are empowered to build a strong community through education and family-sustaining employment.
Welcome Letter
Dear Friends:
Welcome! We are excited about our new website and appreciate your interest in learning more about Community Women’s Education Project (CWEP). As you navigate our website, pay particular attention to CWEP’s Kids Early Learning Center, the only nationally accredited childcare center in Kensington; and note that CWEP, as a leader in the literacy community, ranks 4th out of 20 literacy providers in Philadelphia and 16th out of 130 in Pennsylvania according to the PA Department of Education.
CWEP provides education, pre-employment training, and support services to economically-challenged residents primarily in the Kensington community. For almost 29 years CWEP has been instrumental in educating and improving the basic skills of over 16,000 adults and children. We employ a holistic approach to education and training for the families by:
Ø Engaging our learners, staff, partners, Board, and funders in process of program development, assessment, implementation, and revision;
Ø Providing critical support services—counseling, emergency transportation, emergency food, and childcare;
Ø Offering specialized attention to our learners, and;
Ø Integrating technology and real-life learning materials in the classrooms.
CWEP began as the Women’s College Program in Kensington. Responding to community need, our services expanded in the 1980’s to include pre-vocational/pre-college and computer classes, a parenting program, as well as counseling and on-site child care. In 1995 our child care center became state-licensed; in 1998, our center was selected to be a demonstration site for Child Care Matters; and in 2004 CWEP’s Kids achieved national accreditation.
CWEP’s staff, students, and Board of Directors participates in and advocate for broader issues and concerns that affect our clients particularly as they transition from welfare to work. By actively participating in forums, public actions, and letter writing campaigns, we support issues and activities pertaining to the lack of affordable housing, voter registration efforts, an improved educational system, and safety to build stronger communities.
I invite you to navigate our website, learn more about CWEP’s programs and accomplishments and visit the “How you can help now” for volunteer opportunities. Please don’t forget to click on the “Donate now” button and pledge your support today.
Feel free to contact me for more information and a tour of CWEP.
Sincerely,
Alexis T. Brown, MBA
